Leaving old things behind: College edition

collegeIt never hurts to leave old things behind and when the kiddos leave for college is a great time to revamp your home. Don’t be afraid to make room for new home decor. Check out these two things you can do to make the most of moving your kiddo to college.

Pack effectively. If it doesn’t fit, put it in the haul pile for Mr. Junk. If you’ve had it since Freshman year of high school and it now has holes in it, toss it in the haul pile. Remember, unless you’re moving more than an hour away – you’ll more than likely be returning home to visit during the Fall, Christmas and Spring breaks, so you don’t have to pack everything in your closet. Pack clothing that you’ll wear during the current season. This will cut down on the amount of clothing you’ll have to fit in your dorm room.

It’s time to toss the old toys. Parents, we know watching your child go off to college can be hard, but keeping their old baby toys isn’t going to make them young again. If the rocking horse in the basement hasn’t been taken for a ride since 1997, toss it in the haul pile. This also includes the old Dr. Suess books, Beanie babies, Barbie dolls, action figures, you name it. If it’s old and isn’t being used anymore, add it to the haul pile.

Now, we aren’t saying just because you’re little one is moving out that you have to throw out everything that belongs to them, but it’s time to do some spring cleaning. So don’t be afraid to sift through their room, closet and old toy boxes in order to make more space in your home.

Cleaning out the garage 101

Organizing the garage Cleaning out the garage can be tricky, especially because many people consider their garage to be perfect for storage. But what do you normally put in storage? Things we don’t use anymore, broken items and old baby toys from your youngest child whom is now 30. Mr. Junk understands that some things can be hard to part with, making it harder to bring yourself to accept that it’s time to throw in the towel on somethings. So check out these quick tips to having a tidier garage.

  1. Hang it up – If you can hang it up, get it off the floor and hang it up today. Get yourself a rack, something you can hang your tools on and keep them out of the way.
  2. Throw it away – If it’s been sitting in the garage for over five years collecting dust, throw it away. If you’ve been saying you’re going to fix it for the last six months, throw it away. If it doesn’t work, throw it away.
  3. Donate it – If someone can make better use of something you’ve had sitting in the garage than you can-donate it.

Don’t waste your space by filling it with junk. Clean your garage today.

Three common causes of bad odors in the house

Eliminate bad odors Is something stinking up your house? Don’t worry, Mr. Junk has got you covered. Take a look at these three common causes of bad odors in the house.

  1. Garbage disposal – Remember the chicken fat you didn’t want, so you cut it off and put it down the garbage disposal? Yep, food could be the source of some pretty awful kitchen stenches. Although, meat may have been boneless, garbage disposals are strong enough to dispose of certain items with just a few seconds of being on. Foods like this are best thrown away to avoid strange smells coming from your sink.
  2. Bathroom sink – The ugly truth is, that horrible smell you get when walking into the guest bathroom that’s barely ever used is, yes-you guessed it, the sewer. A way to avoid this is by running the water in that bathroom every once in awhile (maybe, once a week or so). This smell occurs when all the water has evaporated from the plumbing pipe, it leaves room for gases and fumes to raft through the pipes.
  3. Carpet – If the previous tenant was a smoker, the odor could be embedded in the carpet, air ducts and even the walls. Getting rid of this smell may require a professional carpet cleaning. Also, Pet owners know that accidents happen sometimes, even if you consider your pet to be “potty-trained,” especially if the animal is ill or in a new environment.  Pet urine is another situation that may call for professional carpet cleaners.

Three reasons to declutter your property

Sidewalk clutter At Mr. Junk, we strive to get rid of junk quickly and efficiently. Recycle as much of it as possible or donate it to charity. Not only will we be helping the environment and community, but will also be donating a portion of our profits to local charities. Check out these three reasons to keep your business or property clutter free.

  1. Appearance – These days, everything is about appearance, especially when running a business or managing a real estate property. The outer appearance of a building can make or break it before a potential customer or tenant steps inside of the building.
  2. Property value – Allowing a property to become cluttered with debris or trash can and will cause the value of your business or real estate decrease. So, it’s better to keep up with it than to “let it go.”
  3. Protect the environment – Leaving debris and, or trash on the outside is a hazard to animals. Do your part to help improve and protect the environment by making sure your business or property is clutter free.

Decluttering your business or property will enable you to attract potential customers and tenants, while increasing the value of your property and protecting the environment.

Moving smart: 3 things to toss before the move

moving boxes According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one in nine people moved in 2013-2014. Regardless of if it’s your first time moving or if you move frequently-the process of moving comes with the same headaches. What should you take? What should you leave? Don’t worry because Mr. Junk is going to make sure your next move will a great one.

3 things to toss before the move:

  • Appliances – Moving day is a good time to assess the appliances you have. Chances are, you have at least one appliance that you’ve been trying to make stretch for longer than you should. Therefore, if you have a fritzy microwave, a coffee maker that needs constant fixing or a borderline dangerous food processor, take this time to invest in new appliances and add the old appliances to the haul pile.
  • Worn/broken furniture – Yes, we know you’ve had so many good times in the brown recliner with cotton coming out the seams, but it’s leaning on one side and falling apart man. Step back and honestly assess whether you’ll ever polish it up. If you will, fix it up before the move. If not, add it to the haul pile.
  • “I’ll use it some day” stuff – Let’s face it, “someday” is not coming. If it was, that old piano in the guest room wouldn’t have so much dust on it. Make your moving load lighter and add it to the haul pile.

By eliminating these things from your moving load early, you’re sure to make the most of your moving days ahead. Organize your stuff before you move and call Mr. Junk to haul off the things you don’t want to take to your new home.

4 Signs You’re Heading for Hoarding Territory

Most people’s idea of hoarding comes from the media. Who hasn’t seen clips of people with monstrous piles of clutter, filthy homes, or so many animals that their food and waste take over the house? But that isn’t how it starts. Here are 4 signs you’re starting to hoard.

Major Collector

People collect all sorts of things, but hoarders cross the line. It starts with a collection or two, which builds to clutter, then spirals into piles of junk that take over your home. If you’re a hoarder, you might have several collections others would deem trash, but to you it’s all important.

Keeping Unused Itemspaint, scraps, and debris in basement

There is a rule in organizing: if you haven’t used something in the last 6 months, dump it. This is difficult for hoarders, who have a hard time getting rid of stuff and find value in anything they collect. You could be on your way to hoarding if you keep things you don’t need or use, thinking you might use it later or that it’s too precious or important to throw away.

Storage Space

Many hoarders use every inch of their homes as storage. Storing a few things is normal, but when your storage breaks free from closets and begins taking over your home or car, you might have hoarder tendencies.

Social Habits

People that suffer from hoarding are typically antisocial. If you notice you’re breaking relationships with those close to you and becoming increasingly reserved (along with the constant collecting and storing of items), you could be on your way to a problem.

Hoarding is a serious issue. If you want to cut off your hoarding tendencies before they take over your life, call Mr. Junk Roswell junk removal to help you get rid of the things trapping you in a hoarder mindset.

Make notes of your biggest problem areas before diving into summer clean up.
  2. Make a replacement plan. You don’t have to buy a new outdoor chaise to replace the one that’s hitting the curb, but don’t leave the space empty, either. Decide whether to buy a new outdoor table, plant a tower garden on the porch, or simply refinish the deck and let it speak for itself.
  3. Talk to the pros. If you’re planning a major landscape renovation, backyard refresh, or outdoor building project, you want it done right. Don’t DIY projects that are out of your area of expertise. If you’re not sure what to do, it’s time to call the pros.
