This is not a post on how to reduce the size of your waist line… you’ll definitely need to look elsewhere for the kind of information. The “junk in your trunk” we’re focusing on has a much higher carbon footprint.

The holidays are a time of celebration. A time to gather with friends and family and share in fun festivities of love and happiness. The holidays are also guilty of producing the MOST WASTE all year long. Sorry to burst your happy-cheery-holiday bubble, but we all know it’s true. Between shopping for food, gifts, and activities to keep the little ones entertained during their break from school, the amount of “junk in your trunk” skyrockets this time of year. BUT, it doesn’t have to. There are a number of simple steps you can take to reduce the amount of waste accumulated during the holidays and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laid a few of them out perfectly!

• Got gifts to wrap? Instead of spending big bucks for fancy new wrapping paper, go the old fashioned route by using newspapers, magazine pages, or my personal favorite, comic strips! If you do go for the traditional wrappings, do your best to save what you can so you can reuse the paper next year. AND, if you decide you just can’t go without buying some new rolls of holly jolly wrapping paper, consider getting solid colors so you can use that roll for other gifts like birthdays and anniversaries.
• Avoid the “paper or plastic” question at the grocery store and bring your own reusable cloth shopping bags. Paper and plastic bags pile up in landfills so choosing to use your own bag, or no bag at all for super big or super small items, is a step in the right direction to eliminating that waste all together.
• Throw a decorations party! A party to prevent waste? YES! Inviting family and friends over to your home to help create decorations will keep the strands of old broken lights from piling up. Make ornaments from old greeting cards, garlands by stringing popcorn and cranberries, and wreaths out of artificial greenery and flowers. Re-use what you can in future years!
• Lastly, consider buying rechargeable batteries for your own electronics or electronic gifts. Not only will you be saving the amount of harmful materials thrown away, but you can save money at the same time!

The holidays are here, if you can believe it, and no matter what you and your family and friends celebrate in the coming months, there is probably one thing that rests on everyone’s minds; parties.

One of my favorite things about the holidays are all the wonderful parties! It’s the perfect time for friends and family to get together and celebrate and it can be a lot of fun to host your own holiday shin-dig. But playing host (or hostess) can be a daunting task. You want to ensure everyone has a good time filled with memorable moments but satisfaction and safety are of the utmost importance when planning your big event. Here are a few things to remember as we get neck-deep in the holiday fun!

• When serving alcohol, be sure you are also offering a variety of foods throughout the night. Enjoying food with alcohol can help slow its absorption into the bloodstream, and give your guests a safer journey home. It will also be beneficial to stop serving alcohol an hour before your party is slated to “end”. Even if the festivities run over, it will ensure your guests have time to sober up.
• Remember that some guests won’t be drinking so be sure to provide plenty of options like water, soft drinks, and the like. You can even get fancy by making TWO versions (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) of a festive party-themed punch. I mean really, who doesn’t love punch?
• Just in case your guests haven’t thought of it themselves consider designating a driver, providing cab rides home, or making up an extra bed. Better to be safe than sorry with guests who are unable to safely drive themselves home.

Although we all want to be remembered as the person who threw that AWESOME holiday party, we also should be responsible when consuming and serving alcohol. Avoid accidents and injuries by promoting safety along with the fun at your holiday bash! Party on everyone!

We were incredibly lucky to have been barely effected by the wrath of hurricane Sandy. Looking at the images and video of her destruction along the east coast it really puts things into perspective and has made many people incredibly thankful for the things we often take advantage of like internet, electricity, running water, and the roof over our heads. We’d like to send our well wishes to all those who were effected by Hurricane Sandy, and all of those who are still struggling in her wake.
